TUITION-FREE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS
CARMEL, IN NOBLESVILLE, IN
Originally Options was a “conversion” charter school formed from Carmel Clay School’s Matrix Alternative School program. The Matrix program was sponsored by The Carmel Clay School Board. In the fall of 2002, under the leadership of Kevin Davis and Barbara Maschino, the Matrix School was converted to a charter school, Options Charter School - Carmel. The school provided a small, safe learning environment to students who had struggled in the traditional public school system.
After two years of operating under the sponsorship of Carmel Clay Schools, Options, Carmel Clay Schools and Ball State University agreed it was best to change Options to a BSU sponsored school.
With a cap of 130 students, the waiting list for the school grew to the point where a second school was needed to help better accommodate the number of students who thought Options would be a place for them to succeed. So in 2006 Ball State University approved Options Charter School - Noblesville to open its doors.
Even in areas where traditional public school systems excel, some students need something different. Currently, Options Charter Schools serve 270 students in its two Hamilton County Locations. These students progress towards the same graduation requirements that are placed on all Indiana students. In addition all students participate in community service, internships, and service learning projects.
Today, thanks to a partnership with the Community First Initiative, juniors and seniors will be paired with an adult mentor, to advise and guide the students as they approach their graduation. Since 2002, Options has graduated 244 students. Even though most of those students entered Options after academic failure, 58% have gone on to post-secondary training.
The future of Options depends on continuing to attract the right students; the right staff; talented and productive board members; parent, alumni, and community support; and the lawmakers of this state and country. As of now, charter schools are not fully funded as compared to the more traditional public schools. To continue its mission, the Options Charter Schools must find ways to bridge that gap.
